Pattachitra Art

Pattachitra is the art of doing traditional paintings on a piece of cloth. These paintings generally depict mytholological stories of Mahabharata & Ramayana. The colors used for the paintings are natural stone colors.

The Beehive India has been associated with pattachitra artisans particularly Gangadhar (now a President awardee) for a long time. Earlier he was also doing his paintings on fabric. However, he has always been open to newer & innovative ideas, so we experimented by doing the same paintings on different materials like wood, plastic & stone, quite successfully.

We developed a lamp on which we played with idea of perspective & creating an illusion. We intend to explore further on mixing traditional pattachitra craft with contemporary ideas of creating illusion, playing with right division of spaces, right placement and different kind of compositions.

Also, working with different colour schemes, surfaces, colors which are brighter & mass production friendly; is an area of interest for us. Stone colors are dull and prone to water & wear tear. We plan to develop colors which are scratch and wear & tear resistant and water proof.
