Observations
- The Bamboo craft had never been documented earlier, we were the first designers to enter this craft pocket.
- Visited every household, extensively clicked & documented the entire product range.
- There were chief artisans who were doing very fine work in Bamboo using cutting & splitting techniques
- The artisans were highly sensitive to using Bamboo, not even flakes / powder was wasted. Products were developed around the component.
- Roots of Bamboo were used.
- There was element of story telling in the products like Crow & The Pot.
- If the quality of the product range is improvised a little, the can sell anywhere across the country.
- No electricity was present in this area, and the entire process of product making was manual.
- The artisans are selling at most at the famous Sonpur Mela, they are entirely unexposed to the market beyond that.
Products / Techniques / Tools Developed
- We developed hand tools for manually splitting Bamboo, to increase productivity. Also the tools made standardization of sizes much faster.
- Discussed and developed storage & packaging methods.
- Developed Animal forms, Toys like Aircraft, Ant, Mouse, Tray etc using the physical and structural properties of Bamboo.
