Wooden Comb Craft

About The Craft

The craft of making wooden combs is centuries old.  The style of motifs suggest that the craft has come from Persia.  Comb Craft is a see through jali work entirely hand created, using hand tools. To create the motifs artisans make the tools themselves. Each motif requires a unique tool.

The motifs are very intricately carved and are nature inspired patterns. The width of the tree decides the length of the comb not the height of the tree, as the comb is made across the grains & not  along the grains.

Over a period of time, as plastic combs invaded the markets , comb craft became superannuated. Comb craft  is now practiced  only by a handful of  artisans in Bijnore, U.P.  The Beehive India intervened in this craft sector, and we have created a diversified range of products like Trays, Napkin / Cutlery Holder, Tealights, Lamps, Photoframes etc.  For the first time Comb art form has been practiced on a new application. Also traditionally comb craft was done on Sheesham and Ebony wood. We have experimented with many other woods like rubberwood, paddock, eucalyptus, Teak etc. Our intervention has definitely helped in reviving the craft  as the artisans were getting disillusioned  owing to the waning interest of customers in the traditional comb products.
